Ready To Volunteer in DC for the Holiday?
If the cutest puppy eyes can’t convince you to give, I’m not sure what will. Ho Ho Ho if you’re filled with jolly spirit then get out there and volunteer in DC for the Holidays! The holiday season is a time for giving, and we want to show our residents and readers how they can make a positive impact on the District and the globe by giving some of their time this season.
One of the greatest parts of living in D.C. is the overwhelming number of individuals and organizations dedicated to improving our community at home and abroad. During the holidays, many initiatives are well worth getting involved in if you have the time. Here are our favorite ways to volunteer your time this season.
Holiday Volunteering Opportunities
There are so many volunteer opportunities that you, and the whole family can be a part of during the holiday season. Check out some of our favorites below.
The Holiday Project
The holiday project coordinates visits to hospitals, nursing homes, and other institutions to help people who otherwise wouldn’t have anybody to visit with during the holidays. So Jump in and give a little love, spend the season visiting with new people and see how the power of giving can change your life. You can sign up to volunteer on their website here.
Toys for Tots
Toys for Tots is a nationwide organization that collects Christmas gifts for less fortunate children. In addition to donating money or toys, you or your organization can host its own drive to help the cause. Everybody deserves to have a wonderful holiday season, and participating in this initiative is just one way you can make a difference. To host a drive, you’ll need to get in touch with your local Toys for Tots campaign. Click here for more information.
Food and Friends
Food and Friends delivers groceries and meals to those suffering from life changing illnesses such as HIV/AIDS, cancer, and other illnesses. From December 17th to January 11th, Food and Friends needs volunteers to help package and prepare foods in their kitchen. By volunteering a few hours of your time, you’ll be helping them deliver food to over 3,000 people struggling with severe illnesses. Visit their website here for more information about the holiday volunteering program.
Thrive DC
Thrive DC aims to end homelessness in DC by providing a range of services to help stabilize homeless, unemployed, or otherwise struggling people’s lives. You can help them complete their mission this holiday season by volunteering your time in a variety of ways including serving food, providing administrative support, or help their clients find employment. For information about the opportunities available and to apply to volunteer, visit their website here.
Spread Some Holiday Cheer this Winter
Each of these organizations relies on the hard work of thousands of volunteers each year to advance their mission and help those in need. If you have the time this season, we encourage you to check out the opportunities above.
Volunteering in DC is a fun way to make a real difference in people’s lives both at home and across the nation. Remember to Volunteer in DC anytime of year if you were born with the spirit of giving!
