1. Eastern Market

Eastern Market was added to the National Register of Historic Places. Why? Because of its status as one of only a handful of historic public markets in the area. The market caught on fire in 2007 but was restored to its original glory through a two-year project.

When it was first built, Eastern Market was supposed to be one of three markets throughout the city. Unfortunately, the Western and Central Markets did not take off, and Eastern Market is the only one of the three that remains.

Eastern Market has both indoor and outdoor stores. You can peruse rows of bakery products, flowers, cheese, and dairy products, and seafood in the main hall. You’ll also find Market Lunch, a famous spot for blueberry buckwheat pancakes.

If you’d prefer to hang out in the sunshine, step outside and browse the stalls of local farmers in the bustling streets. There are plenty of live bands that play in the area, as well as artwork and handicrafts available for sale.

No matter what you’re looking for, you’re sure to find it at Eastern Market!

2. Glut Food

Glut Food is a lovely spot to visit for your groceries and produce. The market was founded in 1969 by conscious objectors to the Vietnam War. Today, the market continues to live out its motto of reform and social justice.

There are no “managers” at the store. Instead, all the members of the co-op have an equal say in how the store is run. When surplus income is obtained from the store, the earnings go into causes which the store believes in – For example, the Washington Peace Center.

This co-op is a nonprofit organization whose prices only cover the cost of the goods. That’s great news for you because it means you get the produce at seriously reasonable prices!

With just about anything you could want available, Glut Food is a great local spot to head to for your groceries.
