The crowd goes wild, and popcorn flies into the stands as the stadium explodes with joy. What could be better?

When it comes to sporting events, DC is the place to go. Team spirit runs high here.

If you’re new to the area or DC sports, don’t fret. Here’s what you need to know to become a die-hard fan in no time.

Baseball

Fans of quality hot dogs, good beer, and grand slams belong in Nats Park, cheering on the Washington Nationals.

Baseball used to be a staple of Washington for a long time – until 1972 when the Washington Senators became the Texas Rangers.

After a 33 year gap, baseball returned to the nation’s capital in the form of the Washington Nationals. The beloved team has been here since 2005.

You can find them at Nats Park at least 81 days out of the year. The huge outdoor stadium is home to over one hundred delicious concession stands. So show up hungry.

They even have miniature versions of some of DC’s most famous food spots, like Ben’s Chili Bowl and Medium Rare.

A few names that you absolutely need to know to fit in are 3-time Cy Young winner Max Scherzer, all-star third baseman Anthony Rendon, and the greatest teenage hitter in the history of the sport, Juan Soto.

These three often play a huge role in getting the team a Curly W.

By the way, that’s what Nats fans call it when the team wins. The Curly W is also the symbol of the Washington Nationals.

Even if you aren’t usually a fan of baseball, you’ll want to experience Nats park at least once. Especially if you’re feeling patriotic.

The Nationals organization has fully embraced its DC heritage. The main mascot is a bald eagle named Screech, and you can often find him in the stands, hyping up the crowd.

Don’t be afraid to ask for a picture. He’s very friendly.

He’s also not the only mascot. The racing presidents also make an appearance every single home game in the middle of the fourth inning.

The president’s race is a beloved Nats park tradition in which Abe, Teddy, George, and Tom race from center field to first base.

For a couple of guys over a hundred years old, they move pretty fast.

Some other highlights of DC baseball are bobbleheads, the incredible atmosphere, and, of course, the chance to catch a home run.

The ballpark is right next to Navy Yard, so head over early and take a walk around the beautiful area.

Great apartment complexes around Dupont Circle too, only a short distance from  Nats Park. All you need to do is take the green line from U St station and get off at Navy Yard-Ballpark Station.

Just follow the crowd to the stadium.

Go Nats!

Basketball

If you’re a basketball fanatic, DC is a great place for a local sense of community and team spirit! Washington is home to the Wizards, formerly known as the Bullets.

If you’re just getting into DC basketball, you’ve come at a great time. It’s an exciting time for the Wizards.

With the recent news of the franchise relieving their long-time President, Ernie Grunfeld, the organization is looking to make some serious changes to its management and overall team trajectory.

The team struggled in the past to make it to the playoffs, and it’s been hard on the fanbase.

But the future changes in management have given Washington Wizards fans, commonly referred to as “WizKids”, a sense of hope and excitement.

With new management comes the chance of acquiring crucial new players and potential superstars from other organizations and adding them to the roster.

In the basketball world, one season can be completely different than the following season if the right changes and adjustments are made.

Currently, the Wizards key superstars are John Wall and Bradley Beal.

John Wall, a North Carolina native and point guard for the Wizards, was drafted as the first overall pick in the 2010 NBA Draft.

Known for his quickness and ball-handling abilities, he’s able to not only get his teammates involved but the crowd and fans too.

For many years, Wall has been known to be the quickest in the entire NBA roster! When he’s zooming up and down the court to finish a play, there are very few opponents that can keep up with him.

Bradley Beal, a shooting guard for the Wizards, is right next to John Wall and just as important to the team.

Together, they’re widely regarded as one of the best backcourts in the NBA.

Beal was chosen as the third overall pick in the 2012 NBA Draft. As a very versatile player, he’s become one of the faces of the franchise.

As he’s able to shoot from almost anywhere on the floor or drive to the basket for emphatic slam dunks, he’s an extremely valuable player.

Capital One Arena is home to the Wizards so plan out a visit to a game, and you won’t be disappointed.

Just be ready to heckle and cheer all night long.

Hockey

If you are not currently keeping up with DC’s hockey team, the Washington Capitals, now is the time to tune in!

Just last year, the Capitals were able to end the long-time championship drought that DC has experienced ever since the Redskins won the Superbowl in 1991.

Led by superstar and captain, Alex Ovechkin, the Capitals finally brought home a shiny, new Stanley Cup after defeating the Western Conference Champions, the Vegas Golden Knights.

Upon their victory, the team celebrated with a parade that ran from Constitution Avenue all the way down to 7th St. NW.

Hockey appeals to viewers for its high intensity and fast pace. After all, most of the game consists of players skating around at high speeds, and bashing into both the walls and each other.

It can be easy to lose track of the puck, but you’ll know when the team scores a goal because the entire stadium will go wild. Protect your beer when this happens.

Deck yourself out in all red and cheer the team on to victory.

Whichever sporting event is your vice, you can surely find a team to get behind and support in the beautiful city of Washington, DC.

The sense of community around our neighborhoods is palpable, especially on game days.
